In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of African police deployed in peacekeeping operations, as well as the number of peacekeeping police deployed in Africa.
In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of African police deployed in peacekeeping operations, as well as the number of peacekeeping police deployed in Africa. This African contribution to international peace and security brings with it both opportunities and concerns. By assessing the current state of African peacekeeping police, this report aims to provide a basis for thinking about how the continent can continue to develop its police capacity.

This backgrounder will describe the UN sanctions and UN Panel of Experts and their role in responding to lucrative and deadly trade in regions of conflict. It will first provide a brief background on the history of UN sanctions and of how targeted sanctions became one of the UN’s primary tools for stopping violent conflict.
